After a three-year hiatus, Bangladesh’s First Division Hockey League is set to return on October 10, ending a long wait for one of the country’s key domestic hockey competitions.

The return of competitive hockey has generated renewed interest among clubs and players, particularly those who have had limited opportunities to play regular matches during the break.

Eleven teams will compete in this year’s league: Wari Club, Farashganj SC, Hockey Dhaka United, Shishu-Kishore Sangha, PWD SC, Dhaka Wanderers, Combined SC, Rayerbazar SC, Mukti Bihanga Tarun Sangha, Dhaka Young Star and Bachelor SC.

The absence of the First Division League for three years deprived players of regular competitive action. The impact was particularly significant for young players seeking to make the transition from age-group hockey to the senior level.

The domestic league is also an important source of players for the national team. With discussions frequently focusing on a shortage of players for the national squad, the prolonged suspension of a major domestic competition has further limited the development pipeline.

Regular league competition helps players maintain match fitness, develop the ability to handle pressure and adapt to a competitive environment. Maintaining continuity in the First Division League will therefore be crucial to strengthening the pipeline for the national team.
