Jinnat Akter has ended Bangladesh’s 40-year wait for an individual medal at the Asian Games, winning bronze in the women’s 52kg wushu event.
The medal was assured after Jinnat, a 23-year-old athlete from Netrokona, advanced to the semi-finals following the disqualification of Indonesia’s Tharisa Deya Florentina.
Jinnat faced China’s Wu Die in the semi-final on Wednesday but lost the bout, ending her hopes of advancing to the gold or silver medal contest. She will receive the bronze medal at the medal ceremony.
Jinnat’s achievement marks the first individual Asian Games medal for Bangladesh since boxer Mosharraf Hossain won bronze in the light-heavyweight category at the 1986 Seoul Asian Games.
No Bangladeshi athlete had won an individual medal at the Asian Games in the four decades since then.
Jinnat’s bronze has finally ended the long wait at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.
