Garment workers from several factories blocked roads in Dhaka’s Mirpur areas, including Mirpur-10, 11 and 12, on Sunday morning, demanding a minimum monthly wage of Tk 30,000.

The protests disrupted traffic in the surrounding areas, causing immense suffering to commuters and people travelling to different destinations.

The workers began blocking roads around 9:00am on November 1, starting at the Mirpur-10 roundabout. Later, workers from different garment factories took positions on roads in Mirpur-11, Mirpur-12 and the Proshika intersection, further disrupting traffic.

Abul Bashar Mollah, assistant commissioner of the Mirpur Traffic Division, said garment workers had blocked roads again on Sunday, halting traffic through Mirpur-10.

Police were trying to maintain traffic movement through alternative routes by introducing diversions, he added.

The latest demonstration followed a similar protest in Mirpur on Saturday, October 31, when garment workers took to the streets demanding higher wages.

Around noon on Saturday, the protesters moved from Mirpur-10 and gathered in the Shah Ali area.

After 2:00pm, clashes broke out between the workers and security guards of a garment factory in the area.

At one stage, the workers vandalised the factory and a shopping mall, according to the report.
