A container train derailment in Dhaka’s Tejgaon area has caused major disruption to train schedules, with trains departing from and arriving in the capital running two to two and a half hours late on Thursday.
Two wheels of a coach of a Dhaka-Chattogram-bound container train went off the tracks at around 6:20am, disrupting rail services and preventing several trains from entering Dhaka on time.
The recovery operation was completed at around 10:20am.
The disruption was particularly evident at Airport Railway Station, where passengers had to wait for extended periods.
The Jamuna Express, scheduled to leave for Mymensingh at 5:13pm, had yet to arrive at the station around 7pm.
The Brahmaputra Express, scheduled to depart at 6:43pm, was also delayed.
Similarly, the Egarosindhur Express, scheduled to leave for Kishoreganj at 7:15pm, had not reached the Airport station by the scheduled time.
Dhaka Railway Station Master Mohammad Anwar Hossain said the derailment had prevented several trains from entering Dhaka, causing delays throughout the schedule.
He said the situation was gradually returning to normal and expressed hope that train schedules would be restored by the night.
