A severe cyclonic storm, Arnab, began making landfall on India’s Andhra Pradesh coast in the early hours of Wednesday, bringing strong winds and heavy rainfall, according to officials.

The cyclone has uprooted trees and disrupted power supplies in coastal areas. Authorities have evacuated thousands of people from vulnerable areas and cancelled some train and flight services as a precaution.

The India Meteorological Department forecast winds of 125–135 kilometres per hour, with gusts reaching up to 150 kilometres per hour.

A storm surge could inundate low-lying coastal areas.

No deaths had been reported in the initial updates.
