A deep depression over the southeastern Bay of Bengal and adjoining southwestern Bay may intensify further into a cyclonic storm, prompting the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) to advise the country’s four seaports to keep hoisted distant warning signal No. 1.

The information was announced in the BMD’s special bulletin No. 3, signed by Assistant Meteorologist Afroza Sultana on Sunday (November 1).

According to the bulletin, a low-pressure area over the southeastern Bay of Bengal and adjoining Andaman Sea moved northwestwards and intensified into a deep depression. It was centred over the southeastern Bay and adjoining southwestern Bay at 6:00am on Sunday.

At the time, the system was located 1,325 kilometres southwest of Chattogram port, 1,260 kilometres southwest of Cox’s Bazar port, 1,265 kilometres southwest of Mongla port and 1,240 kilometres southwest of Payra port.

The depression is likely to move further west-northwestwards and intensify into a cyclonic storm, the BMD said.

Maximum sustained wind speed near the centre of the deep depression was around 50 kilometres per hour, rising to 60 kilometres per hour in gusts or squalls. The sea remains rough near its centre.

The BMD has advised Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra seaports to maintain distant warning signal No. 1.

Fishing boats and trawlers in the North Bay have also been advised to remain in shelter and avoid venturing into the deep sea until further notice.

Meanwhile, the BMD’s 24-hour weather forecast, effective from 9:00am Sunday, said some places in Rajshahi, Khulna and Sylhet divisions might experience temporary rain or thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds.

Elsewhere, the weather is likely to remain mainly dry, with partly cloudy skies at times.

Night temperatures may remain nearly unchanged across the country, while daytime temperatures could rise slightly.
