The International Crimes Tribunal may deliver its verdict next week in a case against seven accused, including banned Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, over alleged crimes against humanity committed during the July uprising.
Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam told reporters at his office on Thursday (September 3) that arguments from both the prosecution and defence have already concluded. The case could therefore be listed for verdict on any day next week.
On August 17, a three-member bench of International Crimes Tribunal-2, headed by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, concluded the hearing of arguments and kept the case awaiting verdict.
The seven accused are Obaidul Quader, Awami League Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, former state minister for information and broadcasting Mohammad Ali Arafat, Jubo League President Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, General Secretary Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, Chhatra League President Saddam Hossain and General Secretary Wali Asif Enan. All seven are currently absconding.
The prosecution completed presenting evidence on August 2, with 29 witnesses, including the investigation officer, testifying before the tribunal.
The tribunal framed charges against the seven accused on January 22 this year and ordered the trial to begin. The judicial proceedings formally started on December 18 last year after the tribunal took cognisance of the formal charges filed by the prosecution.
