Houthis declare Saudi Arabia unsafe except Mecca, Medina

Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi movement has declared Saudi Arabia unsafe for air travel, warning airlines, airport workers and passengers to avoid the kingdom’s airports and airspace, with the exception of the holy cities of Mecca and Medina.

The warning came amid escalating fighting between the Houthis and Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces, following deadly attacks on Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport.

The group said Saudi airports and airspace remained vulnerable to attacks and urged airlines and travellers to take the warning seriously.

It also threatened further retaliation against Saudi Arabia over its military operations in Yemen.

The escalating conflict has raised concerns over aviation safety, disrupted flights and heightened fears among pilgrims travelling to Islam’s holiest sites.
