The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has initiated steps to bring allegations of corruption, abuse of power, acquisition of illegal wealth and money laundering against former principal secretary and former power and energy secretary Dr Ahmed Kaikaus and former Feni-1 lawmaker Aliuddin Ahmed Chowdhury Nasim under investigation.
ACC Public Relations Officer Aktarul Islam confirmed the development on Monday.
According to ACC sources, an intelligence report was received containing allegations that Kaikaus had acquired illegal wealth through various forms of corruption, irregularities and abuse of power.
The ACC had earlier sought detailed information from the relevant authorities regarding the allegations. After reviewing the report received, the commission found that an investigation into similar allegations against Kaikaus is already underway under a file maintained by the ACC’s Money Laundering Wing.
The commission has therefore proposed attaching the newly received allegations to the ongoing investigation and taking necessary action. Approval has also been sought to send a letter to the ACC director general (money laundering) in this regard, based on the intelligence report and recommendations.
Meanwhile, former MP Aliuddin Ahmed Chowdhury Nasim faces allegations of abusing his power to grab land, engaging in recruitment and party-post trading, and embezzling money through various irregularities and corruption. He has also been accused of laundering thousands of crores of taka abroad and acquiring assets beyond known sources of income in his own name and those of his family members.
ACC records show that an investigation into the allegations against Nasim is already underway through the commission’s Integrated District Office in Noakhali.
The ACC has recommended attaching the newly received allegations to the existing investigation. A proposal has also been made to approve sending a letter to the ACC director general (Investigation-2) for necessary action based on the intelligence report and the recommendations of the intelligence unit.
ACC sources said further legal action would be taken based on the verification of the allegations and information obtained through the ongoing inquiries and investigations.
The commission stressed that neither of the individuals would be considered guilty unless the allegations are established through investigation.
