Police have recovered a pressure cooker containing a bomb-like object from a field in Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka, on Wednesday morning (August 12).
The object was recovered from a field near Laltek Ghora Mosque in Sadhapur Goper Bari, under the Bhabanipur Police Camp.
Locals said they spotted a blue plastic drum lying in the field in the morning. Upon checking, they found clothes and a pressure cooker inside the drum.
According to local sources, three unidentified men allegedly left the drum in the field sometime during the night.
After being informed, Bhabanipur Police Camp In-Charge Imran Hossain went to the spot with a team of officers.
“We went to the scene after receiving the information and moved people to a safe place. The bomb disposal unit has been informed and is on its way,” Imran Hossain said.
Savar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Saiful Alam said police learned about the incident in the morning and officers were deployed at the scene. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Bomb Disposal Unit was heading there, he added.
“The perpetrators may have carried out such an incident to create panic among the public, based on our initial assessment. However, what is actually inside the pressure cooker can only be confirmed after examination,” the OC said.
He added that police were investigating the incident and would take legal action after the investigation. Efforts were also underway to identify and arrest those involved.
Earlier, on July 31, police recovered a pressure cooker containing a bomb-like object from a bag left on a bench at a grocery shop in Ashulia, Savar. The DMP Bomb Disposal Unit later neutralised the object through a controlled explosion.
Police alleged that a man aged between 30 and 36 had visited the grocery shop that evening and asked to buy a soft drink. He handed the shopkeeper a Tk 500 note, but left after being told there was no change. He allegedly left the locked bag at the shop.
Police said they were trying to identify the man.
