A Bangladeshi youth named Md. Raju was shot dead by a gunman in Brooklyn, New York City, while another Bangladeshi national was injured in the incident.
The incident took place at around 11:30 p.m. local time on Saturday (August 22) at a fried chicken shop called “American Best Wings and Pizza” in Roundsville.
Raju was a resident of Kongshonagar village in Ward No. 3 of Amishapara Union under Sonaimuri upazila of Noakhali, Bangladesh. Raju’s cousin, Humayun Kabir, confirmed the incident to his family.
According to eyewitnesses and relatives, a gunman entered the shop and opened fire, hitting Raju and another Bangladeshi who were working there. Raju was shot in the chest, while the other Bangladeshi was shot in the leg.
They were taken to a local hospital in critical condition. Raju died while undergoing treatment. The other injured Bangladeshi is reportedly recovering after receiving medical treatment.
Jahangir Alam, acting chairman of Amishapara Union, said he had heard about Raju’s death. He said a pall of grief had descended on Raju’s village following his death.
Raju’s family has sought assistance from senior government authorities to bring his body back to Bangladesh.
