The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-2 has ordered the publication of notices in newspapers directing fugitive accused, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former IGP Benazir Ahmed, to surrender in a case filed over alleged crimes against humanity surrounding the Hefazat-e-Islam rally at Shapla Chattar in Motijheel.
The tribunal issued the order on Thursday following a petition by the prosecution.
According to court sources, the accused have been directed to appear before the tribunal by September 16. The next hearing in the case has been scheduled for September 20.
The notices must be published in one Bangla and one English newspaper within the stipulated period.
Earlier on Thursday morning, 10 arrested accused, including Hasanul Haq Inu, Shahriar Kabir and Dipu Moni, were produced before the International Crimes Tribunal. Journalist Farzana Rupa was not brought to the tribunal as she was reportedly ill.
The other accused produced before the tribunal are former state minister for home affairs Shamsul Haque Tuku, former food minister Dr Abdur Razzaque, former minister Abdul Latif Siddique, former IGP AKM Shahidul Haque, retired Major General Ziaul Ahsan, former DIG Abdul Jalil Mondal and Ekattor TV Managing Director Mozammel Haque Babu.
The 30 fugitives named in the case include Sheikh Hasina; former home minister Dr Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir; Awami League Presidium Member Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim; Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif; former information minister Dr Hasan Mahmud; Awami League Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim; former state minister Advocate Mrinal Kanti Das; Awami League Joint General Secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak; former minister Mofazzel Hossain Chowdhury Maya; former Jubo League chairman Omar Faruk Chowdhury; former MP Salauddin Mahmud; Gonojagoron Mancha coordinator and spokesperson Dr Imran H Sarker; former IGP Hasan Mahmud Khandaker; former IGP Dr Mohammad Javed Patwary; former IGP Benazir Ahmed; former RAB director general Md Mokhlesur Rahman; former army chief General Aziz Ahmed; former RAB additional director general (operations) Lieutenant General Md Mujibur Rahman; former additional IGP Sheikh Mohammad Maruf Hasan; former additional IGP (SB) Mahbub Hossain; former additional IGP (SB) Monirul Islam; former DMP deputy commissioner (headquarters and administration) Md Anwar Hossain; former DMP deputy commissioner (Traffic-South) Ashrafuzzaman; former DMP additional deputy commissioner (Motijheel Zone) SM Mehedi Hasan; former DIG Harun-or-Rashid; former DIG Biplab Kumar Sarkar; former DIG Superintendent Syed Nurul Islam; former DMP additional deputy commissioner (Motijheel Division) Md Asaduzzaman; retired additional superintendent of police SM Shibli Noman; and former Motijheel police station officer-in-charge BM Farman Ali.
Earlier, the tribunal had scheduled August 16 for producing 11 accused in the case. The prosecution, however, sought more time as production warrants had not been issued against two accused and non-execution reports (NERs) on arrest warrants had not yet been received.
On July 27, Tribunal-2 took cognisance of the formal charges brought by the prosecution against 41 accused in the case. It also issued warrants against the fugitives and ordered that those already arrested be produced before the tribunal.
The case contains two charges. The first concerns the alleged killing of 32 people at Shapla Chattar in Dhaka on May 5, 2013, during the Hefazat-e-Islam rally.
The second charge concerns alleged killings in different parts of the country, including the deaths of 20 people in Siddhirganj, Narayanganj, on May 6, 2013.
