Prime Minister Tarique Rahman recalled memories of his childhood and youth while visiting Feni, his maternal grandfather’s home district, on Thursday.
He reminisced about his early visits to the area while addressing a rally near the Kheyaghat Muhuri Bridge in Parshuram upazila at noon.
“I came to my maternal grandfather’s home after a long time. On the way here, I was remembering that I first came here in 1984, most probably. Then I came in 1991,” Tarique said.
He recalled staying in the area during the 1991 election campaign when local voters elected his mother, the late Khaleda Zia, from the Feni-1 constituency.
“At that time, this road [the Fulgazi-Parshuram road] did not exist. Many elders here may remember that it was a sandy road,” he said.
Tarique, the grandson of Iskandar Majumdar, said he had travelled from the upazila headquarters to a Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) camp located farther away during one of his visits.
He said he had the opportunity to return to his maternal grandfather’s home after many years “by the grace of Allah”, but this time he had a responsibility to fulfil.
“Just coming to my maternal grandfather’s home for a visit is not enough; I also have to work. I have to work for the people of the country and for the country,” he said.
Speaking at the inauguration rally of the rehabilitation project for the Muhuri-Kahua Flood Control, Drainage and Irrigation Project, the prime minister said the government had undertaken the excavation of the Muhuri-Kahua canal or river to benefit local people.
He said the project would benefit around 450,000 people in the area and provide irrigation facilities to farmers cultivating nearly 34,000 hectares of land.
As a result, agricultural production would increase by around 100,000 metric tonnes, he said, adding that higher production would benefit farmers and help keep food prices within people’s purchasing capacity.
Tarique said he wanted to take the prayers of all members of his maternal grandfather’s family so that he could fully implement his government’s programmes for the people.
