BNP-nominated candidate Eliza Zaman has been elected unopposed as a member of parliament for reserved women’s seat-23 in the 13th National Parliament.
The Election Commission announced the decision in a notification signed by Returning Officer and EC Secretariat Joint Secretary Md Moin Uddin Khan on Monday (November 2).
According to the notification, Eliza Zaman, nominated by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its alliance, was the only candidate to submit nomination papers by the deadline of 4pm on October 26 for the by-election to the vacant reserved women’s seat.
Her nomination was declared valid after scrutiny on October 27 at the Election Commission headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka.
As she did not withdraw her candidacy by the deadline of 4pm on Sunday (November 1), her name was published in the final list of candidates under Section 12(1) of the Reserved Women’s Seats in Parliament Election Act, 2004.
According to party sources, Eliza Zaman is a member of the BNP’s National Executive Committee and joint convener of Pirojpur district BNP. She also serves as the organising secretary for the Barishal division of the Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal.
The seat fell vacant after MP Ferdousi Ahmed Misty resigned following an incident involving the vandalism of a Radda outlet in Mirpur, Dhaka.
The Election Commission subsequently declared the seat vacant and announced the by-election schedule.
