Former lawmaker and Jamaat-e-Islami leader Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman is scheduled to seek bail at the High Court on Sunday (November 1) in a case filed over alleged disorder at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.

A High Court bench comprising Justice KM Zahid Sarwar Kajol and Justice Md Zakir Hossain is scheduled to hear the bail petition.

Senior Advocate Shishir Monir, counsel for Akhtaruzzaman, confirmed the matter, saying they would present arguments on the bail petition today.

Earlier, on October 26, a Dhaka court rejected his bail application. Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court-5 Judge Md Sadekin Habib Bappi passed the order.

According to the case records, the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Akhtaruzzaman from his residence in the DOHS area of Dhaka Cantonment on the afternoon of October 2.

The following day, he was produced before a court, which granted police one-day remand for interrogation.

After the remand, he was again produced before the court on October 4, when his bail petition was rejected and he was sent to jail.

The case was filed over an incident at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on October 1, when tensions reportedly arose over mismanagement, a shortage of luggage trolleys, delays in baggage delivery and the unavailability of Zamzam water.

Akhtaruzzaman was subsequently accused of creating disorder at the airport, obstructing government officials in the discharge of their duties and harassing a security officer.
